KoAct® is a patented chelated compound of calcium and hydrolyzed collagen peptides (collagen I) that was shown to increase bone mineral density and bone strength in a Tokyo university animal study. The KoAct® results were significantly better than calcium or a simple mixture of calcium and collagen.

The Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology examined the effect of KoAct® on bone mineral density and bone strength using a well-known rat model.

Major Results

A. Effects of KoAct® on Bone Mineral Density (BMD)

Chart - Bone Mineral Density

The KoAct® dosage group increased bone mineral density (BMD) by approximately 3.5% as compared to the Control Ca group fed the same amount of calcium. The KoAct® 10X dosage group increased BMD by 11.1% as compared to Control Ca group.

The HC group (hydrolyzed collagen mixed with calcium that has not been reacted and is in the form of CaCO3 ) did not increase BMD significantly as compared to the Control Ca group.

B. Effects of KoAct® on Bone Strength

Chart - Bone Strength

The KoAct® group increased femur bone strength by about 9.9% as compared to the Control Ca group fed the same amount of calcium (Ovx Control Ca). KoACT® 10X group increased BMD by 25% as compared to the Control Ca group. The HC group, which contains the same amount of calcium and collagen as the KoAct® group, showed no increase in femur bone strength compared to the Control Ca group.

Conclusion

The study has shown that KoAct® dose-dependently increased femur bone strength and bone mineral density in this animal model of osteoporosis. KoAct® can provide an additive effect on femur bone strength and bone mineral density from its unique calcium and hydrolyzed collagen composition. This unique property of KoAct® is not observed with calcium alone (the Control Ca group) or a simple calcium and collagen mixture (the HC group).
